trendsetter: (noun) one that sets a trend; someone or something that starts or helps to popularize a new fashion, style, movement, etc.
Dear Friends,
The fall of 1973 marked the start of our Annual Fall Production Sale. This year began the trend at Thomas Angus Ranch that we now strive to continue: Bob and Gloria staked their success on meeting the ranchers' needs through intensive selection for economic and carcass traits. They knew the importance of fertility, thriftiness, and longevity to a cattle producer's bottom line. And they never lost sight of what beef should be: the tender, flavorful protein of choice for consumers celebrating and connecting with friends and family. They would labor for decades trying to combine these traits into a single herd, each year delivering progeny closer to the dream.
The 1980s and 90s dealt unique challenges to the cattle industry, but Bob and Gloria found these also came with unique opportunities. The 1980s would become defined by the industry-wide push for larger, leaner carcasses to chase changing consumer preferences. Ironically, this would hurt consumer preference for beef, as sales plummeted in the 1990s, making it more difficult for cattle producers to stay afloat. Bob and Gloria continued their extensive selection of economic and carcass traits through the 80s—combining lower input requirements and higher-quality outputs to help the producer turn a profit.
As Thomas Angus Ranch entered the 2000s, new and promising technology entered the market: in-vitro fertilization, herd management software, and genomically enhanced EPDs. We jumped at any opportunity to adopt technology to improve genetic progress, herd health, and animal productivity. We continue to embrace the exciting and rapidly changing beef industry, just as Bob and Gloria did when implementing EPDs, adopting artificial insemination herd-wide, and embracing the great work of the Certified Angus Beef program.
While much has changed around the Thomas Angus Ranch over the past five decades, the most important trends remain strongly intact: do good by your customers, never take quality beef for granted, and never get stuck in the past when the future is where your business needs to thrive.
Thank you for your continued support of our genetic program—your business is never taken for granted. We know you'll love the breed-leading progeny in this year's Annual Production Sale catalog. Please reach out to Rob, Lori, or Clint with any questions.
We look forward to seeing you online or in the stands on October 17th.
Sincerely,
The Thomas Family
